Closing the Gap for Vision

Indigenous Australians are three times more likely to be blind or have vision loss than the broader population despite the eye health and vision care gap closing in recent years.

Last week the Indigenous Eye Health Unit of University of Melbourne hosted the Close the Gap for Vision 2020 National conference with peak government, Indigenous affairs, Aboriginal community health organisations, professional associations and health care workers meeting to discuss both the gains made and to reset actions to reach the goal of eliminating the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous eye health by the year 2020.

As Chair of the Optometry Association’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander national advisory group, Gary attended the conference and presented on the performance and future of Optometry schemes and programs.
