School Readiness Screening

Do you have a child aged between 3.5 to 5 years due to start primary education soon?

The school readiness screening with our occupational therapist provides information for families and teachers about how your child’s school readiness skills are developing and recommendations to support the child’s success and independence at school.

Some of the areas that are assessed include:

  • Drawing and writing skills

  • Fine motor skills

  • Cutting skills

  • Motor planning

  • Gross motor skills

  • Visual perception skills

The screening takes 30 minutes can be booked in conjunction with your child’s comprehensive vision assessment. Give us a call to book on 9332 7222.

Struggling with foggy glasses while wearing your mask?

foggyglasseswithmask

Struggling with foggy glasses while wearing your mask? Try these tips!

  • Make sure your mask fits nice and snug. A loose mask that results in gaps near your cheeks or nose will allow the warm air to escape. Try adjusting the elastic/ties to tighten and if your mask has a wire insert, shape the wire so it bends around your nose.

  • Sit your glasses on top of your mask, rather than underneath.

  • Fold a piece of tissue into a small strip and place (or tape) to the top edge of your mask before you put it on.

Back to School Checklist

BCO B2S blog.png

The new school year is just around the corner!
We've put together a couple of tips to help you get prepared.

Dude, where’s my glasses?

If your child's glasses had some time out over the holidays, put them on your back-to-school list so they are packed in the school bag ready to go for the first day back.

Sliding is for the playground, not your specs!

Check your child's glasses are fitting nice and comfortably. Sliding down their nose or look a bit crooked? Come in so we can give the frame an adjustment.

New teacher?

Give the teacher a quick rundown on when your child should be wearing their glasses. Do they need to wear them full-time or inside the classroom only?

If the teacher has any questions about your child's vision and their learning, we're happy to provide some information with your permission.

Good workplace = happy eyes!

Set up a space at home that is best for your child's visual system for homework or study. A desk and chair that provide good posture, good lighting, and a slanted work surface can all help improve physical comfort and attention while reducing physical and visual fatigue.

Now Available: MiyoSmart Myopia Control Lenses

MiyoSmart

Bullcreek Optometrist is one of the first practices in Australia to be certified to prescribe the new MiyoSmart myopia control lenses, developed by Hoya together with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

This innovative lens uses Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) technology incorporating a single vision corrective lens with a convex surface that is comprised of hundreds of small segments, each providing myopic defocus. This lens structure makes it possible to simultaneously slow the growth of the eyeball and provide clear vision.

Based on a two-year clinical trial results, MiyoSmart is proven to curb myopia progression in children on average by 60%.* In 2018, it was awarded the prestigious Grand Prize, Grand Award and Special Gold Award at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, Switzerland.

MiyoSmart lenses are a great non-invasive and easy to adapt option for myopia management.

COVID-19: Your Frequently Asked Questions

Photo: sarashakeel on Instagram

Photo: sarashakeel on Instagram

WE ANSWER YOUR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS IN RELATION TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.

Should I still get my eyes tested?

If you healthy and not considered a part of a group vulnerable to COVID-19 (ie if you have a compromised immune system or a chronic medical condition), it is still safe to come in and get your eyes tested. Anyone with ongoing eye conditions of any sort or new visual symptoms is strongly advised to keep to their regular reviews, or book in should you have concerns. As a healthcare provider, we practice high level of infection control and have introduced additional safety measures during this time. You can read more about these protocols here.

If you have recently travelled overseas (or have been in contact with someone who has) or are feeling unwell, we ask that you do not visit the practice and postpone any appointments to a later date.

What if I am unwell and I have an eye emergency?

If you are unwell and have an eye emergency, please call our practice to speak to one of optometrists. If it is very urgent, please go directly to the Emergency Department to seek treatment.

Is it still safe to wear contact lenses?

It is safe to continue to wear contact lenses, however, it is vital to follow proper hand washing practices. Hands should be thoroughly washed with soap and dried with a clean towel or paper towel before inserting and before removing lenses. Do not let others handle your contact lenses, your contact lens case or solutions, and never share contacts!

Should I switch to daily disposables?

The safest way to wear contacts is to use single-use daily disposables. It would be strongly recommended to switch to these if possible should you be using monthly or fortnightly lenses. If you are interested in switching to daily disposable lenses, give us a call to discuss your options.

What if I am using fortnightly or monthly contact lenses?

If you are not wearing daily disposable lenses, you should continue regularly disinfecting your lenses according to your optometrist's directions. Standard practices should apply for ensuring solution and cases are safe; always change your solution each day, clean your contact lens case daily, and replace your case monthly.

Should I wear my contact lenses if I am feeling unwell?

As usual, it is best to stop wearing your contact lenses if you are feeling unwell, and instead wear a pair of prescription glasses.

How can I disinfect my glasses?

You can clean your glasses using lukewarm soapy water or a mild dishwashing liquid. Do not use cleansers that contain harsh chemicals or alcohol and avoid using heat as this can cause irreversable damage your lenses and frames.

Slide on Some Sunglasses and Be a SunSmart Kid!

Photo: sweet_petite_matilda on Instagram

Photo: sweet_petite_matilda on Instagram

IT’S EASY TO FORGET SUNGLASSES ARE NOT JUST A FASHION ACCESSORY! THEY PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN KEEPING US PROTECTED FROM DAMAGE DUE TO ULTRAVIOLET (UV) RADIATION, AND KIDS ARE NO EXCEPTION.

Exposure to UV radiation from the sun during childhood is a major risk factor for the development of skin cancer and eye damage later in life. To protect your child’s skin and eyes, follow The Cancer Council’s five SunSmart steps:

  • Slip on sun protective clothing

  • Slop on SPF30 or higher sunscreen

  • Slap on a hat

  • Seek shade

  • Slide on some sunglasses

WHAT DAMAGE CAN UV CAUSE EYES?

Prolonged UV exposure can cause photokeratitis, effectively sunburn to the eye. By the time a burning sensation is felt, the damage is done.

In the long term, repeated exposure to UV radiation can cause a number of serious eye conditions including macular degeneration, cataracts, pterygiums, cancer of the conjunctiva, and skin cancer of the eyelids.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN KIDS SUNGLASSES?

  • If possible, opt for a close fitting, wrap-around style that cover as much of the eye area as possible.

  • Make sure they meet the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1067.1:2016. lens category of at least 2, but preferably 3 or 4.

  • For greater protection against glare, choose a pair with polarised lenses.

  • If extra durability is needed, look for flexible materials.

  • Toy or fashion-labelled sunglasses do not meet the requirements for sunglasses under the Australian Standard and should not be used for sun protection.

NO HAT, NO SUNGLASSES, NO PLAY.

As awareness around early protection from UV increases, sunglasses being included as part of schools’ SunSmart program is becoming more common in Australia. Check with your child’s school about their SunSmart policies.

Why You Should Add an Eye Test to Your Back To School Checklist

BTS2020

AN ASTOUNDING 1 IN 5 CHILDREN SUFFER FROM AN UNDETECTED VISION PROBLEM, HOWEVER, THE RESEARCH SHOWS A SHARP DECLINE IN OPTOMETRIC SERVICES TO CHILDREN OF ALL AGES UP TO 14.

WHY SHOULD YOU PUT AN EYE EXAMINATION ON YOUR BACK TO SCHOOL CHECKLIST?

As vision is responsible for 80% of all learning in a child's first 12 years, it is important to regularly check your child’s eyesight and vision skills. The beginning of each school year is an ideal time to have your child's eyes tested to ensure that their visual development is proceeding normally and to pick up any underlying conditions early.

Vision problems can interfere with your child’s ability to learn both in and out of the classroom, and can also impact their emotional and social development.

SOME KEY SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF VISION PROBLEMS INCLUDE:

  • One eye turns in or out while the other points straight ahead

  • Frequent blinking

  • Red or watery eyes

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Frequently rubbing eyes

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Tilting head noticeably

  • Covering or closing one eye

  • Difficulty learning to read

  • Holding a book very close when reading

  • Leaving out confusing words when reading

  • Squinting or sitting very close when watching television

  • Difficulty recognising familiar people in the distance

  • Complaints of headaches, blurred or double vision

Vivid Vision Virtual Reality is here!

pepper_picker_screencap blog.png

We have an exciting new addition to our Vision Therapy program -the Vivid Vision virtual reality!

We’re proud to be one of approximately 300 practices worldwide that provide the Vivid Vision Vision Therapy training system. Vivid Vision uses virtual reality technology to help treat binocular vision issues like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye turn), and vergence disorders (eye teaming).

How does it work?

The patient wears a headset to immerse them into a computer generated environment. Vivid Vision has a variety of fun games that the patient interacts with in the virtual environment. While it may sound like just play time, the virtual reality games are expertly constructed to improve visual clarity for amblyopic patients, improve depth perception, and other visual problems by selecting the visual information that each eye receives. This stimulates the brain to use both eyes together as a team and strengthen binocular vision.

Each game targets different vision issues, so our Vision Therapist will select the games that are best suited to the patient’s individual therapy program. During a Vivid Vision session, the Vision Therapist monitors the patient’s performance and makes adjustments to the game’s settings according to the patient’s progress.

To see some of the games in action check out the video below.
